  1. On Thursday, Urshela made a gaff at third. On Friday, Carpenter misjudged a fly ball, which resulted in two runs, and Vierling let a ground ball go by him. On this poll, I voted for Urshela, but the defense of all three has seen some mishaps, and I hope the wheels aren’t coming off defensively for this team…

    • Although this blog covers offense, which has improved, the Tigers’ defense has declined, after sparkling. I expect Tigers to continue to hit better and to field more efficiently too. Gio and Matt will score more runs when the other hitters come alive.

  2. What’s not to like with Carp? He hired Judge’s hitting coach and has become our best hitter. He has worked with coaches to improve his defense and he’s got a great attitude with his teammates and fans.

  3. kerry is a poor man’s judge via the same merlin…err… batting coach. I love all the self starting, under appreciated, dedicated and committed ones to thier best effort excellence in all walks of life. Truly one of a kind rare breed.

  4. Small sample size but for me it’s Kerry “Bonds” Carpenter who looks like he’s ready to do damage on every pitch. And after last night at Target Field facing Joe Ryan he is hitting .328 with a .992 OPS. And although he’s had some defensive lapses or miscues, he’s shown solid defense for the most part.

  5. I selected Gio simply because I felt that Kerry was ready to break out, and was expecting (hoping?) he would be one of our best hitters. As far as surprise, Gio tops my list.

  6. For me, it’s got to be Vierling. Showed unfulfilled promise with the Phillies and seemed to start to figure it out last season as the Tigers moved him around. He’s still way better against lefties but is outstanding at three positions and adds speed on the basepaths.
