As part of the 10-year deal that Nike has with MLB, they are rolling out City Connect uniforms for each team. They are described as alternate uniforms that offer different color schemes, fonts and graphics and considered to be fun and “fashion forward.” Nike describes them as “reflecting the cultural aspects of each team’s home city.”
While the Rockies have black, white and grey uniforms with a backdrop of mountains, the Boston Red Sox have bright yellow uniforms with turquoise trim. Washington, DC has pink cherry blossoms splashed across the front of theirs. San Diego’s brown uniforms have given way to a tropical vibe of pink, yellow and mint green. The hats are green while the belts are hot pink.
Nike is the decision maker. It is believed that this strategy is to introduce new jerseys (and thus more money in sales) and attract a younger fan base. So far, the reviews from fans are mixed.
At the end of 2024, 23 teams will have them. There is yet to be an announcement about the jersey debuts for the Athletics, Guardians, Mets, Rays, Tigers, Twins and Yankees.
All teams are supposed to get their own but not every team wants one. The Yankees have made it known that they are against changing the pinstripe uniform.
As you see, the Detroit Tigers do not have a City Connect jersey yet. It is unclear whether it is due to their recent performance standings (thus not a big demand) or whether the organization is possibly fighting the update.
What do you think? Is a modern take on the classic Olde English D a good option to have?

Not being able to see the new uni, but reading about some of the changes, I am a no vote. I haven’t liked the camo uni’s either.

I have no interest in the Tigers getting a City jersey but I’m sure it will happen at some point because money talks, so what will it be based on? Detroit is known for cars, music, pizza, and ruin porn. Gun to my head, I’d choose a jersey with the red/yellow/green MOTOWN across the chest, or the same color theme spelling DETROIT.

Do not mess with the Olde English D. Keep the traditional home uniforms and tell Nike to take a hike.

Nope. I echo Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof, “Tradition!” Don’t mess with our “Olde English D”.

I side with the Yankees, the olde English D stands alone and has had a city connect for a century. Classic survives with out new color or gimmicks because all we need is the classic white adorned with a single D. A logo seen and recognized everywhere.

Can’t even imagine a Yankee home uniform without pin stripes.

Take Nike’s money but only for road games. Leave the Home jerseys alone.

if we are forced to wear them, on the road would an acceptable compromise for some games, but overall I can’t stand them

It’s horrible enough that the Nike logo is on everything dugout apparel from hoodies, sweaters and jerseys. I will not buy or wear anything with that logo. As a charter member of the A.L., I believe our jerseys should be left alone.

The Tigers already have 2 of the best home alternate uniforms in MLB. The Detroit Stars and Los Tigres. Most of the City Connects just don’t make sense to begin with and you know Nike’s will feature cars and/or Motown, I’ll pass.

MLB meets the NBA. The myriad of NBA alternate jerseys is insufferable, and MLB is following the same path. Kudos to the 7 teams who are resisting the money grab, the Tigers home uniform and Olde English D are among the most iconic in all of sports.

I believe the uniforms should do more than just represent the city. Many fans come from Grand Rapids and other out state communities. Mackinaw Bridge may be just as appropriate as a photo ofa automobile or the Renaissance center.

Absolutely, until you hit the western UP, the Tigers rule and the draw is real. I’m not sure how far the draw South is but they own the North. Grew up in the thumb and always a Tigers fan.

If you ask me, bright yellow with turquoise trim, pink cherry blossoms, tropical vibe of pink, yellow and mint green (with hot pink belts) all sound a bit effeminate for a bunch of grown men! I sure hope the Tigers nix this idea.

The City Connects are supposed to reflect a city landmark or other city connection that is related to the Tigers. We don’t really have anything other than our old stadium and the ’84 title unless we go with burgundy and gold colored pizza unis.

How about the Joe Louis fist?

whenever I see a game with those things, especially the Red Sox, I turn the game off. They are nauseous to my eyes.

I must be having some sort of internet problem down here in Toledo. I have searched for about a half hour now, and neither myself or any of the guys in the Warehouse District can seem to find the “Hell No!” button on the survey response. Could you maybe have Alex or one of your superior tech team check into that for us please?

Definitely living up to your name today my favorite bandito. I to was unable to find the Hell No! button either.

Leave the D alone. The Yankees are right. One hundred years of tradition is fine.

I can’t even think of what awful design that MLB/Nike would come up with, leave the uniforms alone. For once I agree with the NYY, if this trend continues the uniforms are going to look like a NASCAR. Ugh.

The old English D is Detroit, certainly as much or more than anything they could put on a uniform!
