MONDAY MUSINGS

by Holly Horning

Today, it’s about quick hits – thoughts that hit me as the week goes on as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories.  Even the quirky.

There will be something here for everyone.

So let’s get to it!  Here are the most interesting topics that hit my brain cells over the past week………..

1. Parker Meadows has had such a terrific debut and extended time with the team so far.  One that even included a walk-off homer to win the game no less.  His entire family was in the stands for most of his first games.  But his brother, Austin, was missing although Parker had talked to him before his first game.

I have to feel for the older brother who is going through so much.  The fanfare over his brother certainly can’t be helpful for his progress – and may even set him back further from recovering from anxiety. As we see now, the Tigers announced that Meadows will not be back this year and is most likely to be non-tendered in the off-season.

2. How good is Spencer Torkelson at becoming the power hitter many thought he would be?  If you use what MLB teams do – a “barrel” – he’s becoming elite.

A “barrel” is the ability to strike a ball that is most conducive to hitting HRs and extra-base hits.  It involves the right combination of exit velocity and launch angle.

Tork is only 1 of 9 ballplayers with 50 or more barrels.  The others?  Shohei Ohtani, Ronald Acuna, Jr.Pete Alonso, Mookie Betts, Matt Chapman, Adolis Garcia, Matt Olson and Corey Seager.  He’s also in the top 10% in barrel rate, exit velocity and hard-hit rate.

3. I know we’ve been accustomed to Al Avila’s lack of trade acumen but fans have to start giving Scott Harris some credit – or at least the benefit of the doubt.  He got so much grief for not trading Chasen Shreve and Jose Cisnero by the trade deadline because their contracts expire after this year.  But you know what?  They are untradeable.  Both put on waivers and not one single team that wanted them.

4. Andre Lipcius was just called up, bypassing Dillon Dingler, Sawyer Gipson-Long (who just got called up), Colt Keith, Justyn-Henry Malloy and Wenceel Perez who are all ranked higher on the prospect list.  The reason?  According to Scott Harris, he can contribute to all facets of the game at the MLB level.  There are those players, esp. Keith and Malloy, who are still having defensive issues.

Lipcius put up outstanding offensive numbers in the minors and he has incredible plate discipline and bat-to-ball contact skills.  He walks a ton and his strikeout percentage is one of the lowest.  But he can also play 1B, 2B, 3B, LF and RF.  It’s this factor esp. that warrants the call-up as the Tigers are trying to figure out who they have for what positions going into next season. He is exactly the type of player Scott Harris said the Tigers will be playing.

5. Riley Greene’s health has become a huge concern for the Tigers.  And the latest diving catch that resulted in another injury to his elbow is just the latest proof that he needs to move to a corner slot.

All of those highlight reel catches are exciting to watch but in reality, it is not because the player excels defensively.  In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

The analysts point to Greene not getting the best jump on fly balls or taking the best route to them.  His speed is helping to compensate for his tracking and timing.  Those amazing catches are really about overcoming his defensive deficiencies.

This is why the Tigers have been talking about moving Riley to either LF or RF and inserting Parker Meadows into CF where his defensive skills are much better and his speed is elite.

6. So many fans are anxious to see players like Colt Keith or Justyn-Henry Malloy come up to Detroit but A. J. Hinch has made it clear that players only get promoted when all facets of their game have been developed and they are confident that these players will fully contribute.

So far, we’ve seen the Tigers wait a little longer in promoting Parker Meadows, which appears to have paid off. He’s performing well and appears to be adjusting much more smoothly than those who came before him.

Isn’t this better than bringing up a player like Spencer Torkelson who strugged in Detroit for well over a year as he attempted to develop his skills but at the major league level? He has talked about how extremely challenging and disheartening his debut was.

7. We know the Bally tv broadcast team for the Tigers is beyond horrible. We also believe it can’t get any worse. But we need to be very careful about what we wish for….

Yes, they actually outdid themselves last week during a game in which Matt Shepard and Kirk Gibson started playing “rock, paper, scissors.” And the tv cameras focused in on them, instead of the game. Worst of all, when the action went back to the field, you could still hear those 2 continuing to play that game in the background.

Is there any other team in MLB that would accept their employees acting in this most childish and unprofessional behavior?

Which one of these stories resonated the most with you?

  1. #4. I’m so over the player has to be efficient in “all aspects”of the game. Nevin, Maton, Short, Baddoo. All have flaws in their game and none  elite defensively. York isn’t good defensive but if he rakes all is forgiven, and maybe Keith and Mallory isn’t perfect but maybe the bat is and that is what it’s needed on this team

    • I’m not. Half of each inning is spent in the field, so position players need to be, at a minimum, average defenders. What good is lots of offense if your sieve defense gives it all back?

  2. Bally TV rattles my chain the most especially when they cut away for long interviews with a debuter’s family. A tv annonouncer should commentate the game add stats and human interest but none of it should take away from the job at hand. I find myself astounded by how poorly they handle thier interviews and game descriptions where Shep often comments after the play when he should be living his job description which is play-by-play.

    • I so agree with you naldo. It is just so darn irritating to not only have to listen to the various incompetent broadcasters, but then we have to listen to Johnny Kaine and the new girl–don’t even know her name–go around the stadium trying to find people to interview (all the while missing the game–you know, the thing we’re there to watch)!! Just so annoying.

  3. Terrific rundown, Holly. I’m glad to see patience and discipline governing our call-ups, and Tork’s emergence and his rank in the “Barrel” stat you cite is impressive. Another item from the week for me is two strong outings from Reese Olson – 13 2/3 innings, 2 runs and 6 hits allowed… we may have a pleasant surprise developing here.

  4. A whole book could be written on Spencer Torkelson with chapters like: “Who’s #1?”, “Mishandled”, “Over My Head”, “What Ego?”, “Meet My Toxic Agent”, “Random Power”, “Tanglefoot”, and “Pick, But Don’t Catch”. Personally I think he’d look great in Yankee pin stripes if Harris could deal him. But of course he’s just the type of guy to come back and burn us.

    • Very creative McWatt but Tork’s untouchable on my team. I just cannot give up that kinda focus and barrel rate. Plus there’s no wall scrapers just Tork Bombs.

    • Typical protocol for rookies continue to pressure them inside and allow no extension. What’s good his defense has not suffered a bit. He’ll get past it once he learns to adjust and force the pitchers back inside the zone.

  5. Yes I have noticed this about Greene. Who do they needto hire to help him man the field better? He doesn’t help the team being injured a lot of the time.

  6. 2. Tork finding his MLB power is a very welcome feature of this season.
    3. I’m not sure how Harris’s trade acumen has been demonstrated yet, particularly with the ERod deadline fiasco in the rearview mirror.
    4. I am glad Lipcius is getting a chance but would strongly prefer that Keith were getting his MLB at bats this September as he is more likely the real deal.

    • Hi, Eddie – #3 wasn’t about Harris’ trade acumen, it was about how fans believe every player is tradable. To clarify your comment about ERod, it was widely reported that he was amenable to the trade and agreed to all the details but when the contract arrived, he requested an additional $20 mill at the very last minute in order to sign. – Holly

  7. The Bally TV broadcast team is beyond exhausting, frustrating and unprofessional. It’s hard to find a segment of their airtime that doesn’t have me wanting to turn my set off. Just this past week Sheppard talked about our no hitters while they were in process.

  8. No. 7 the Bally TV sideshow mess. I am of the belief now that this disaster keeps going on and on is because the majority of the viewers actually want and enjoy this. Detroit is very provincial, and this small town act for shut-ins must be popular. TV is big money and Bally is taking care of business for themselves.

    • Or they’re watching, but leaving the volume off. I gave up on the tv broadcasts over a year ago as I was fed up with Gibson’s absurd tangents, Monroe’s motor mouth, and Shepard’s complete inability to control the booth. I’m finding that combining MLB Gameday with the radio broadcast works reasonably well, as Dickerson is capable and, especially when paired with Andy Dirks, does a good job keeping the listener informed.

      • Dirks is great and has a great demeanor of complementing Dan. He’s the best color radio has had since Alex Avila did some time with Dan before going to the MLB network. I hope Dan can convince Andy to come aboard full time but Andy sounds like family is real important.

      • I agree TBR (and when I’m home that’s exactly what I do). My problem though, is that I spend a lot of time in the summer Up North and I record them when I’m away (hence, I don’t have the option of listening to the radio). I have seriously tried to listen to these guys, but it only irritates the heck out of me and I again hit the mute button when I can no longer tolerate them-lol.

  9. Riley Greene is a total gamer and he gives 110%. I love that determination, but the downside is that a player who goes all out on every play is injury prone. Reminds me of Griffey Jr.

  10. Riley Greene is a good outfielder no matter where he he plays. If Meadows is better at centerfield, then play him at center, and Riley in right field. He plays from his heart, and that will never change.

  11. I do believe that Greene was stationed in left field when he did his Super Man dive and injured his elbow. I think Tiger fans should give Harris every opportunity to work his plan. So far he’s been spot on.

  12. #5 While “diving” for the ball looks cool and on very rare occasions assists the defender in making a play, it is almost never the best way to make the play. You gain no speed (actually slow down), you have only one of three chances for a good result, etc. It wasn’t seen on a regular basis until the past 2 decades with the move to televising every game somewhere.

  13. I think Harris is keeping things close to his vest. A team as desperate as the Tiger’s are for good offensive players, it would be foolish to hold players in Toledo. Malloy and Keith may not start the season in Detroit but I would expect them to be up in June after the date that allows team control for another year.

    • A friend who watches a lot of Mud Hens games says that at third, where we have a need, Malloy isn’t just in need of some polishing, he’s bad. The friend says that Keith isn’t at that level of inadequacy and might become a sort of acceptably below average fielder. I wonder if the thing to do isn’t to put Malloy at DH next year and give him some non-game work on his glove.

  14. The broadcasters are the worst I’ve heard in the 50+ years I’ve been watching. Shep & C-Mo are the worst, followed by those 2 that Shembeckler hired for 1 season. During the off season they really need to replace the broadcast team.
