DEEPER DISCUSSIONS

The All-Star game will be played in 2 days.  Representing the Tigers will be Michael Lorenzen who was selected as a reserve by the AL manager.

It is presumed that if Eduardo Rodriguez had not been injured, he would have been the team’s representative.

But do you agree with the selection of Lorenzen? Through Friday’s games, he sports a 3-6 record and 4.03 ERA.

Do the Tigers have a better candidate?

Would you select Miguel Cabrera who has been picking it up at the plate and is in his last year before retirement? Or Alex Lange who ranks in the top 10 of relievers? Or Matt Vierling who sports both the team’s best slash line and is a plus defender.

Tell us who you would have selected from the list below.

  1. Being that the other 3 options are not All Star caliber, deserving players, I would of picked Miguel Cabrera. It would of been a nice tribute by the league and one last opportunity for Cabrera”s farewell year. True his numbers arent deserving but his legendary career supports the pick.

      • He (Cabrera) got the short end of the stick last year. His at-bat was upstaged by David Ortiz running around the dugouts, so Cabrera only got a fleeting discussion as he was out within two pitches.

    • He already had his “Bye bye” All Star appearance, suitably with Albert Pujols. The Tigers, for the past decade or so, are the poster children for why an automatic berth is no longer a good idea. JMO

  2. It is Miggy’s last year so I would have picked him largely because no one elseis worthy. If Greene had stayed well he would have been mypick as well as Cabrera (It’s the last time for everyone to see him)

  3. To me, Lorenzen’s selection illustrates why requiring each team to have a player in the All-Star Game is a bad rule. No Tiger deserves a spot this year.

  4. Miggy would’ve been my choice! Other than Green who was injured, there was no Tiger who played well, although Vierling came the closest. Miggy has been hitting very well, and is one of the best hitters ever. An appearance in the All Star game would have been a treat to the baseball world.

  5. Why not select Riley Greene? With his injury, he (for now) does not have the minimum plate appearances to qualify for the stat leaderboards, but he is batting .302 with an .822 OPS, plays spectacular defense, and is a young, exciting player.

    • Hi, Brooks – Riley was on the IL during the selection process which is why he’s ineligible. Even if eligible, the Tigers would not allow him to play in the ASG as he is being eased back slowly. – Holly

  6. One paper had an interesting article just before the AS announcement. They listed the 10 Tiger candidates including odds. Lorenzen was not listed. I would prefer Foley as the choice because of consistent good work. Miggy was honored last year so that should be good enough.

  7. this article highlights, in big neon letters, one of the dumbest rules in all of sports- the participation award rule.I’d go with lange because well- I’ll get back with you on that.

  8. Miggy has had his day in the sun. While most of our starters do not reflect the all stars I think of in the past, I do feel Foley or Lange deserve a spot. Lorenzen was not a good choice. We need to let the players pick the all star rosters. Popularity contest do not end up with the best players being represented.

  9. An All-Star selection should be a team’s best player. Cabrera is hitting .245 with one Home Run and 13 RBIs. Alex Lange should be Detroit’s All-Star selection,

    • Not Lange, he’s been struggling for awhile now. If anyone, it should have been Foley – he’s been surprisingly effective all season. I could have supported sending Miggy, though, to give him an actual farewell – unlike that pathetic treatment he received last year.

  10. Struggled between Miggy and Lange but ended up going with future HOF guy Miggy. Lange will get another shot down the road. If Green would have been eligible he would have been a slam dunk & I expect him to be in many more ASG in the future.
