SATURDAY SURVEY

Not that long ago, the Detroit Tigers had a successful month of May and found themselves just a couple games under .500 and out of 1st place.  Since then, they’ve gone on an extended losing streak.

They are now 11 games under .500 and 6 games out of 1st place (through Thursday’s games).

Part of their struggles may be attributed to a taxed starting rotation and bullpen, along with key injuries to positional players and pitchers.  But on the other hand, they continue to put up very weak offensive numbers.

Can this team recover from their current situation?  Will they be able to right the ship to some extent?  Or is this finally who they really are?

How will the Tigers perform for the rest of the year?

  1. If Skubal, Manning, Faedo and Rodriquez return and pitch well and the Tigers finally call up Colt Keith they may yet go somewhere. I no longer count on Lorezen or Boyd. I like Olson but Wentz needs more work.

  2. Skubal, Manning, Faedo, Rodriguez and Brieske are all actively pitching in rehab now and closing in on returning. Lorenzen has also pitched well for the team. It is interesting to think what may occur.

  3. If the injured pitchers can come back and are effective, if the offense and defense stay consistent the Twins and Guardians are beatable, the playoff push is on.

  4. I am surprised at the positivity and the fact that the majority of which I am part see better days ahead. What has convinced me is the approach and now we’re starting to see results. It is been that approach that has allowed them to get Sonny Gray out in four innings and get six runs off Ryan.

  5. I think they continue to have their ups and downs but will not sink or rise to the top. Pitchers returning will be very helpful but 0 runs wins 0 games. Hopefully a player or two “puts it all together “ and can add some substance to the lineup.

    • Agree with your formula but recent history has them scoring 5 or more runs in 6 straight games. The last time, 2014 when they did it for 8 games. The recent success is all about their approach at the plate forcing the pitcher in the zone where they can do damage.

  6. I am amused by the “return from injuries” optimism. This belief supposes that injuries will cease to occur when our stalwarts come back from their aches and pains. That will be a first!

    • With the new medical and training staffs, it actually is a first. No more Doug Teter (sp?) to rub dirt on it and say “You’re fine, get back in there.”

  7. Adding to my currently rather low expectations, shouldn’t contending teams come sniffing around any bright spots in the lineup soon? Trade deadline looming, correct?

  8. As the Talking Heads said back in the day “Same as it ever was”, they do fine playing the AL Central however when faced with teams that are in better/other divisions they are over matched.
