This week, we’ve been analyzing the Tigers’ roster as it pertains to positional players. This roster has been so ineffective – in fact, they regressed this year – despite a massive influx of cash from the owner.
Chris Ilitch has expressed his unhappiness with his now former GM’s inability to improve the team. It stands to reason that he will ask his new GM to move this team forward at both the minor and major league levels.
Thus, it is expected that the new GM will be making some major changes to the current roster including off-loading some contracts (if possible), non-tendering and trading players.
Here’s where it gets fun. You are now the new GM and have to remake this roster. Who are the top 5 players you would keep?
You can only pick positional players, not pitchers, for this exercise. You can also select someone who is a DH. Those on the IL can also qualify. But everyone has to be a member of the current 40-man roster.
And if you can’t come up with 5, that’s OK, too. You will be making a statement.
Please list your 5 “keepers” in alphabetical order for easier reading. One name per line. I’ll tabulate the results and report on this next week.
I’ll kick things off with my top 5. My choices are based upon what they supply that the Tigers overall lack and desperately need. So my focus is on defense and especially offense but also on filling positions that have been empty of worthy candidates for far too long.
Kerry Carpenter
Harold Castro
Riley Greene
Eric Haase
Spencer Torkelson

Thin roster for sure but had the hardest time picking between Carpenter and Austin Meadows. In any case my 5 are:
Baez
Carpenter
Greene
Haase
Torkelson
We desperately need a minimum of 2 FA sluggers.

If you included Cabrera because he’s on a contract then wouldn’t you need to include Baez who is also on a contract?

Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson …. I hope that they can be at least average MLB players. The rest are how do I put this mildly…. not quite able to make the cut.

Thanks for including Meadows who seems so forgotten. He could be a force in 23. Especially, if the fences in the right center gap are moved in.

I agree with your five holly. But long term and lengthy contracts…we’ll…that’s another thing

Baez is my last choice among the five. I chose Baez because he has hit .280 in his last 30 games and could be a good second baseman.

Baez is a streaky hitter. Good one month and then he goes in the tank for an extended period.

Love the Clemens comment!

I included Kody Clemens because he may be the unfortunate symbol of the present poor state of the Tigers talent level. Celebrating his strikeout of Ohtani does not bode well for the present or future.

It’s a toss up between Castro and Haase, but only if Haase is not behind the plate. His defensive skills as a catcher are well beyond underwhelming. I know the new GM has a long to do list, but please, put finding a good catcher on it.

I agree. Hasse is also already 29 (though under team control for quite a while longer). I included him because he Meadows because they could slug a little, a quality sorely lacking in this organization.

None of the rest warrant a “Keeper” status at this time. All others are replaceable, as far as I am concerned.

Your short list is probably the best, Robert, and even Torkelson’s place is probably based more on draft position than demonstrated talent. Julio Rodriguez he ain’t.

I think I know most of the reasons why this is not a good move but I cannot kick a future HOFer to the curb. Otherwise Greene and Haase.
