I would like to see the prospects play the rest of the games primarily. Whether we lose 95 or 100 shouldnt matter so much…both numbers are horrid .We need to see Carpenter,Badoo,Clemens etc to further confirm what we have.
Other than Kerry Carpenter, just what prospects would they play? I don’t see Tork coming back, Kreidler’s not on the 40 man roster. Only 2 position players on the 40 that haven’t played in Detroit yet are catcher Ali Sánchez and infielder Brendon Davis and I wouldn’t consider either a prospect. Once Pineda comes back in Sept there’s only going to be space for 1 more player since rosters are limited to 28. What we see is what we get.
The season has been a disaster, regardless of the final loss total. Management should use the remaining games to help evaluate who can contribute next season, whether it’s a rookie or a veteran.
As bad as the offense has been, it is kind of amazing that, unlike in 2003, nothing has been said about the Tigers setting a record for losses in a season. The 2006 team that shockingly, after years of bad performance, went to the World Series was constructed primarily through acquisitions. The only home grown talents were Verlander and Granderson. The present roster has already shown that there is little talent to build on. Play the prospects, though they are already showing limited potential. A competitive future may well depend on capacities to assemble FAs into a team, so whoever plays out the season doesn’t really matter.
I’m with Spartan1963. I don’t want any legitimate building block of the rebuild’s rebuild to be blocked, but I don’t think you play a Zack Short over a Javi Baez just because he is less experienced. As I think AJ has already has pretty much made up his mind about the futures of Clemens, Cameron, Short, and Carpenter.
At this point in time the Tigers have neither ‘prospects’ or ‘regulars’. Lose as much as possible to be in the top 3 for next year’s draft, maybe that pick will entice a competent GM to come to Detroit.
I voted to let the prospects play. However, it’s important to support the culture to win today’s game. Despite their historic offensive weakness capped by a devastating chase rate they play hard evidenced by their late comebacks or attempts at comebacks. As Hughie has said, I think AJ has made some internal decisions by how he fills his lineup and continues to showcase players for our future GM. IMHO threw things are important: (1) get Schoop ready for 2023, (2) keep Riley and Victor (2 players whose skill sets fit the Copa) atop the lineup, and (3) get Tork back to the MLB with his adjusted swing on a plane rather than an upswing. It’s important for Tork to be part of Riley’s success before spring training.
Play the prospects because they can’t do any worse. As to who to bring up, there aren’t many position players that look ready. So I’d bring up a couple of young pitchers to assess their potential – like Austin Bergner (at Toledo) or Wilmer Flores or Ty Madden (both at Erie). When healthy, the Tigers have a strong rotation of young arms including Mize, Manning, Skubal, Turnbull, Faedo, and Brieske. Some are keepers and some may be valuable trade chips. Let’s see what we’ve got.
Agree but can you maneuver the 40 for a showcase of these guys? That would be the challenge. Personally, I’d like to see the new GM maneuver the 40 man.
Get Manning and Rodriguez as many innings as possible to prepare them for more innings next year, and get Haase as much time behind the plate as you can. After that, I don’t really care. What happens in September will have absolutely zero impact on what happens next year for guys like Baez Candelario and Schoop.
You need prospects for this scenario to work. Most of our young talent are pitchers that have already been given a look. I bet they bring up Tork in Sept. I agree with Hughie when he says that AJ has made up his mind on who can play in the league and who cannot. He’ll have his list ready for the new GM!
I voted give the prospects a shot they can’t do any worse than the current crew although limiting it to players doesn’t really give much of a chance to evaluate too many players. Tork needs to stay in Toledo he’s not ripping up AAA at the moment but does sound that he’s made some progress and he needs to build on that for next year

You mean, further confirm what they can’t provide, don’t ya?

There is absolutely nothing to be gained by avoiding a 100 loss season.

They should play the prospects. They’re the future. At this stage who cares how many losses they end up with.
