MONDAY MUSINGS

by Holly Horning

Throughout the week, there are so many smaller stories hitting the media.  They may be bite-size, but often they are just as important as the headline-grabbing news.  Sometimes, even more.

And that’s what brings me to today.  A way to discuss some of these stories. A way to bring them out in the open for discussion.

And that’s the plan for Mondays.  Keeping track of these mighty little bits that hit my radar throughout the week and sharing them with you today because I know one or more will also resonate with you. So, let’s kick off this week’s musings…

The Texas Rangers fired both their manager and President of Baseball Operations last week.  The GM, Chris Young, retains his job.  PBO Jon Daniels, with the team for 17 years, was fired because the Rangers’ owner said that the goals and timeline for rebuilding were not met.

Owner Ray Davis, like Chris Ilitch, had been thinking of replacing Daniels for most of the year and decided to wait until the draft and trade deadline were over in order not to disturb the lengthy process of preparing for both.  But unlike Ilitch, Davis said “For our fans, we must move with a sense of urgency… The fans got to be as upset as I am. I am not a good loser. We are treating this with a sense of urgency that’s why we made a couple of moves this week. We plan to put a very competitive team on the field next year…We will gain credibility with the fans with wins on the field. That’s what I hope these moves will do. “

Don’t you wish Ilitch had said something like that?

But it also appears that the Rangers had a definite rebuilding plan with goals and deadlines identified.  Daniels was fired because they were not met.

I don’t remember ever reading that the Tigers had any kind of a timeline with goals identified.  Never once did I read Avila telling us that the team was right on schedule or that a certain goal had been met.

I do remember him stating back in 2015 that the team would have a Tigers Way of how to play the game.  But it only came to fruition with the hiring of Ryan Garko last year.  It takes 6 years to put something like this together?

No wonder Avila accomplished so very little during his tenure.

And if this is the case, I have to shake my head that such a large organization failed to have any kind of a written plan with the vision, steps and timeline clearly spelled out.  The Tigers shouldn’t be surprised that this project failed miserably.

Concern continues to grow over the development of Spencer Torkelson.  It was hoped that a return to AAA would allow him to refocus on his hitting in a less-stressful environment.

But he continues to struggle mightily.  He is the 3rd worst hitter on the team (through Friday’s games) with a .196 BA and .661 OPS playing in 24 games with 18 hits in 92 at-bats.

Reports say that Tork is getting the lion’s (or tiger’s) share of attention from hitting coach Adam Melhuse.  Melhuse came from the Dodgers system and was promoted to Toledo for the 2022 season.

Good for him but bad for the team when they are ignored in favor of 1 player.

A. J. Hinch also sent Spencer some video but declined to describe them in further detail.

Whether or not Torkelson improves enough to return to Detroit is going to be another statement about the Tigers’ ability to scout, draft and develop their players.  It will be a huge knock on their system if yet another #1 draft pick is unable to succeed in the majors.

And the clock is ticking.  The Tigers cannot go yet another year without a full-time first baseman. The last was in 2020.  Miguel Cabrera was only part-time in 2021.

It is damning that Tigers cannot even find a decent 1Ber – one of the easiest positions to fill – after all these years.  And there is still no heir in sight for the 2023 season.

    • Hope so Dale because his confidence must be nonexistent after being rushed to come up with his pal Riley Greene. The two were hyped as the dynamic duo to carry the team to the next level. And when marketing hype drives roster decisions, what could possibly go wrong?

    • He needs a batting coach to level his swing out and rid him of that golf swing. When he was in Detroit and coming to the plate ,he was swinging the bat like he was approaching the 1st. tee. Fix this and a lot of strikeouts and pop-ups will disappear!

  1. When the Tigers hired Sparky Anderson in 1979, he promised a title in five years – the exact length of his contract. Hyperbole may have been Sparky’s trademark, but he knew his reputation would only carry him so far without turning the franchise into a winner. Chris Ilitch would be wise to spell out expectations and timelines when he hires the next GM – even if some of the details are not disclosed publicly.

  2. For Tork, not sure what to think: He was either way overrated or needs a better batting coach. I’m hoping it’s the latter, but you-know-who drafted him, so…

    • Hi, All – Robert started to delve into the issues surrounding Robbie Grossman and the hitting advice he is receiving from the Braves. This is Tuesday’s big topic so let’s hold off on that discussion and save those comments for tomorrow. – Holly

    • Tork was pretty much the consensus #1 pick. Nothing is guaranteed, but I think Tork is more of a develpment issue than a talent recognition issue. They moved him to third and gave him all kinds of things to think about except hitting when her joined the organization.

  3. If Hinch is spotting flaws in Tork’s swing what does that say about our hitting coaches? Too many players are going for outside help (Kerry Carpenter for one). Hello, anybody home?

    • Speaking of Kerry Carpenter, he slugged all summer and languished in Toledo while the Tigers gave Tork 300 at bats that only seemed to feed into his decline. I hope the next GM makes decisions based on production rather than where a player has been drafted.

  4. Talking about our 1B problems, we had both C.J. Cron and Jose Iglesias, now with Colorado. Jose is hitting .312, Cron .268 with 23HR and 80 RBI. Another one of Avila’s screwups.

    • I think that is more of the bad coaching vs. better coaching in Colorado. Don’t forget, When in Boston, Iglesias hit .330 the year he was traded to Detroit. He came with a lot of hype and a lot of praise for his hitting skills despite his lack of power.

    • Cron benefits from a training staff that makes him do his stretches so he won’t collapse trying to reach for a simple ground ball. And it helps to play for a team that actually gets guys on base to drive in. Can’t get those RBIs without guys to BI (OBP matters).

    • And doesn’t Iggy provide at least an adequate defense at his position? There has been at least a half dozen games lost this year to “defense” at SS (primarily Baez). As for Cron, D at 1B is always over-rated. Look at P Fielder for years. JMO 🙂

  5. Holly, the contrast you drew between Rangers owner Ray Davis and Tigers managing owner Chris Illitch really said it all for me. Davis spoke with a sense of urgency directly to fans as he reiterated his vision. Davis gave fans hope and assured them that he would demand accountability in his organization.

    • Hughie, I think its really starting to hit Chris in the wallet. His financials have got to be taking a hit overall. To me, Chris is only about Chris and nothing else.

  6. I still don’t get the fascination with Garko – the organization can’t identify a single thing he’s done to improve anything. As for Torkleson, unfortunately I don’t think he’s very smart and will probably always struggle with major league pitching.

    • The entire player development department, along with T&C/medical, has been a bad joke for years. Garko has only been in the position for 11 months, nowhere near enough time to fix that many problems. I suspect it’ll take about another 2 years to see how successful his efforts to revamp PD will be.

  7. With no formalized rebuilding plan, is it any wonder some of us laid blame on Chris Illitch for what Al Avila was doing? It was inconceivable that AA kept his job when he was making bad trades and bad FA acquisitions throughout CI’s tenure unless the only order he was given was to cut salary at any cost. I still believe CI deserves 80% of the blame for the lack of progress at the MLB level.

    • I agree with your assessment that Chris Ilitch is largely to blame for the failure of the rebuild because he kept AA around far too long and either didn’t have the foresight, or fortitude to can him after the trade disasters of JD and JV and the subsequent bad FA signings. It should have been obvious to CI that AA lacked precisely those skills that his GM needed to make the rebuild successful.

  8. Unfortunately when Torkleson was drafted he was the consensus number one pick by just about everyone. Can’t blame them for picking him. Can they fix him is the issue now.

  9. On the performance of rookies: maybe, after having seen the instant success of Al Kaline and Justin Verlander, we expect too much too soon. As for 1B, have we really had a decent first baseman since Sean Casey?

    • The Tigers broke Torkelson, he was fine until coming to this organization. If drafted by Rays, Dodgers, Cards or Braves, he would be on his way to stardom. Since 2002, this is who the Tigers have developed, Granderson , Verlander, Zumaya, Castellanos and Porcello. That is it. 5 players in 20 years, the record speaks for itself.

      Liked by 7 people

      • I’m not sure they broke him but his battle with a can opener didn’t help. The Tig’s failed to see the Red flags in Toledo as Tork failed to rebound as he had at all other minor stops. Avila was too proud to keep his pick in Toledo and do what he needed to do to retain CJ as a real and ready first baseman.

  10. If CI only spoke with the passion/need for change like the Ranger’s owner has, Don’t see CI ever doing that. As another poster mentioned organizational changes made to need top to bottom.this off season and expect another 7 year rebuild. I thought it was awful back in the 90’s but this is far worse

    • Ray Davis made moves to show his fan base he is serious on his promise. I’m sure he had faith in Daniel’s as CI had in Avila and I’m willing to give CI a leash as he has poured a lot into supporting AA. And AA’s crony fueled rebuild pales in comparison to what Jon Daniel’s did in Texas before his demise. I sincerely believe CI does want a sustainable winner.in the Copa and showing Al the door is only step one.
