SATURDAY SURVEY

Once again, the debate about whether or not the Detroit Tigers should create their own Hall of Fame has been renewed with the report that the Minnesota Twins have just inducted 3 more members of their organization, including Ron Gardenhire.

In MLB, there are 18 teams that have their own Hall of Fame, including all of the oldest teams. And most of these teams have also retired the numbers of their most well-known players even though they aren’t in Cooperstown.

The Tigers are the only remaining original team without their own Hall. As well, other than Willie Horton’s jersey number, only those players in Cooperstown have theirs taken out of circulation.

While there are many great Tiger players we’d like to see in the Hall of Fame, only 1 is unquestionably deserving of the honor. Lou Whitaker.

Other organizations present binders and video to those who hold voting rights for new members. The Tigers do not. Which is why establishing their own Hall or museum and including Sweet Lou in it would serve as a gentle reminder to those in Cooperstown.

The Modern Era Committee will start meetings this year as they prepare a list of new candidates to be voted on in 2023.

Should the Tigers finally establish their own Hall of Fame or museum?

Consider the feasibility and costs associated with such a move. Prices that will undoubtedly be passed along to the fans. Also think about where this shrine could be placed.

Would you also pay an admittance fee?

On the other hand, should only the truly great Tigers be recognized by Cooperstown? Would including other popular players in a Tigers-only Hall diminish the fame of the truly historic players?

Should the Tigers recognize more players or keep the list highly exclusive?

And what about a strategy to determine who gets recognized in Detroit? Where does the team draw the line?

Consider all of this as you cast your vote today.

  1. I think the Tigers should have a HOF. It should have a wing that is dedicated to the Tiger’s in Cooperstown, a wing for all others who made an impression while becoming fan favorites and a wing for Tiger history and memorabilia. If there is room at the ballpark, I would like to see it there.

  2. We should not be the only original team without a team hall. If the proper investment is made, then I would be willing to pay an admission. Those in Cooperstown should have larger displays in a special area. My concern would be how members would be elected or placed, I would use a formula or election based on an investigation and analysis of the methods of the other 18.

  3. I like the idea of a Tiger Hall, but since our team history spans all eras of the game I would also love to see an expansive and flexible criteria for inclusion– My Tiger HOF would not just be based on statistics. Hughie Jennings (for my famed hooting), Mickey Stanley for playing shortstop instead of OF in the World Series, and Charley Maxwell for hitting Sunday homers. I sort of prefer a Tiger memory-dome instead of a Cooperstown knock-off.

    • Yes. And not just Stanley but Lolich, too, including that memorable moment when Lolich jumped into Freehan’s arms after winning his 3rd complete game in the WS, out-dueling Bob Gibson.

  4. Get in touch with the people who are planning and building the Detroit International River Walk, and see if a Tigers’ Hall of Fame Walk can be worked into the plans. It would have a city-wide appeal, and, if done right, could become a tourist attraction.

  5. Ouch! Please count me out with respect to agreeing to pay more for tickets to cover the cost for a HOF museum. Prices for tickets, beverages, food and parking are already getting too exorbitant for my wife & me. What I can definitely get on board with is adding player names on the outfield wall. Names like Whitaker, Freehan & Lolich come to mind.

  6. Comerica Park does already have the outstanding displays of all the decades in the concourses. I still voted yes…there should be no extra charge. One good sized room with plaques and small likenesses of five to ten players per era depending upon the team’s success during each.

  7. 18 teams have a HOF, but not us? — standing still is falling behind. Note to Ilitch: here’s an easy way to invest in your brand. If there’s room to place a museum at Comerica, it should be free and open to anyone with a game ticket. As per Hughie Jennings idea, there could be an additional Honorable Mention section to celebrate the Mickey Stanley’s of our esteemed history.

  8. Every team and it’s fans deserve a club hall of fame. Most football teams have a ring of glory of teams great players names on a overhang. That’s at least a start on a great idea. An takes some of the sting out of players overlooked in the hall.

  9. The kiosks at Copa are great, in the absence of a hall. However, they should find space somewhere to put a Tiger HOF, with no admission.
