FIVE FOR FRIDAY

by Holly Horning

This week, Bally Sports Detroit announced that they had inked a new multi-year deal to broadcast Tiger games.  These contracts tend to be kept tightly under wraps with years and (esp.) dollar amounts generally not divulged.

Nevertheless, this development gives us more information about the direction of the Tigers.  Here are my 5 biggest takeaways…….

  • The Tigers have decided not to establish their own tv network despite having trademarked a number of names and explored the potential.  Part of the reason could be the current complications and limitations that surround cable/satellite and streaming services.  They are impacted by different pricing and the age of the fan base.  It’s an older age group of fans who tend to prefer cord options while younger fans tend to choose streaming.

  • Tied in with #1, MLB is currently battling broadcasters who want to offer streaming services of ball games.  MLB is looking to own and control those streaming rights, which means that Ilitch, as an owner, would get a cut of those broadcast rights in addition to the broadcast contract he signed with BSD.  Two streams of broadcast revenue without having to pay to establish his own network.  The best of both worlds.

  • The start-up costs for a regional sports network are astronomical, especially when you factor in all the equipment and technology that need to be purchased.  Chris Ilitch presumably has other plans for that money.  Either continuing to purchase casinos but hopefully, spending more on the Tigers’ payroll with some free agents and improving the product.  He’s already putting more money into the operations end of the Tigers in the departments, like analytics.

  • A potential owner’s health problems, combined with Covid and the uncertainty of attendance, appear to have put the kibosh on the early efforts of exploring a team sale.  Should a decision to move on be made in the future, not having a broadcast network makes a sale much easier.  Also, having a massive new contract with BSD, significantly enhances the value of the Tigers.

  • Speaking of contracts, it was reported that the Tigers were earning $50 mill/year from BSD.  The Royals rank 32nd in viewership and recently signed a contract for $52 mill/year.  The Tigers rank 14th and it’s conceivable that they could be raking in over $70 mill/year in revenue without having to spend a dime establishing a network.  And considering that viewership is expected to go up once again, there are additional venues for revenue impacted by having more eyeballs.

What did you miss on our Twitter feed yesterday?

  • Your chance to tell Bally Sports Detroit if you wanted to keep or change their current tv broadcast team.
  • Two teams went to the playoffs this year and lost. Now both are brooming managers and coaches because they didn’t win. What do they have in common?
  • If the Tigers practiced the habits of these 2 teams listed above, would they have won a ring or two between 2006 – 2016?

  2. Started streaming YouTube TV when my Spectrum cable bill took off like a billionaire with a space toy. No BSD – so no live Tiger games. But I’ve learned that radio and MLB Network highlights are sufficient. Wonder if the billionaires that run these sports/entertainment empires will ever notice their greed is destroying the game.

      • Hi, Hughie – This is what I alluded to in my blog. Sinclair and MLB are fighting over the $$$ with MLB wanting to control the streaming services and to take more than what is considered to be their fair share of profits. Sinclair is trying but they are having roadblocks put up against them. In the end, the estimated streaming charge would be $25/month, maybe more, and that is considered to be too high. – Holly

  3. In my area thru Comcast the games on BSD are not broadcast in HD. When the Tigers play the White Sox I watch the Chicago station. How does all that work? Does BSD need to upgrade their cameras? Or is it my cable provider?

  4. I genuinely wonder, now that I have not been able to watch the Tigers on my satellite network for 3 years, how interested I will be whenever, and if ever, BSD inks a contract that puts them back on the air for me.

    • Hi, Robert (and everyone else with same issue) – Do you know about the MLB app? You don’t need cable or satellite to watch the games. You can stream them on your tv, tablet or computer. There are a variety of packages available depending upon whether you only want to watch the Tigers or all of MLB. If you live in the Tigers blackout area, you can still watch them but only after the game has finished. – Holly

      • After losing FSD from Dish, I looked into other options. I rejected the MLB app precisely because of the stupid “blackout” rules. I’m not interested in paying for the “privilege” of watching reruns – if it isn’t live, it’s just not worth it to me. Nor would I be willing to waste $25/month to stream, so I guess it’s back to free radio and gameday.

  5. Chris Ilitch has a primary goal of making money for himself, not doing what is right for the Detroit Tigers or Red Wings. It’s tantamount to greed.

    • Hi, Tommy – Yes, they do read TT. In fact, early on, it was a sports editor at a major daily who emailed me and told me I should be writing a blog on the Tigers. We know they all read TT. I have heard from a handful. The others have appropriated TT’s blog ideas for their own at times. I’m also in contact with some national and regional writers who read TT and we have some discussions about the Tigers. The Tigers, as well, know about TT and read us, I am told from sources within. Thanks for asking! – Holly

  6. Holly, who has the power to choose the broadcasters, the Tigers or BSD? Is that power determined by the terms of the contract? I know the current crew are employees of the Tigers. And it appeared that BSD was in control concerning the Morris controversy.

    • Hi, Naldo – Technically, BSD has control in the hiring but the Tigers have the final say. I hope you voted in our Twitter poll because I tagged BSD so they could see how much fans dislike their current crew. There are rumors that there may not be changes made for next year. :0 – Holly

  7. The MLB App and their blackout rules are infuriating. They only work for “ex-patriot” fans like Holly (lucky woman) who live outside a large geographical area (like the entire state of Michigan). In the old broadcast days, blackout rules were triggered by ticket sales to protect gate receipts (fans in the stands). Now they are applied to extort fans living hundreds of miles away who can’t or won’t pay huge cable TV bills.

    • I feel the pain McWatt. Where I live is in the blackout area for Cincinnati, Pittsburg and Cleveland. If the Tigers are playing any one of those 3 teams i have to find something else to do. On the positive side though, that means that I don’t have to watch any of Mrs. Bandito’s Indians (Don’t you dare call them the “G” word) games! Although since they finished ahead of the Tigers (again) the Indians flag will be flying all winter.

      • Crazy that northern lower Michigan is a blackout zone for Tiger home games but northern Ohio (three hours closer) isn’t. Anybody know if the UP is a Tiger blackout area? Might be worth the snow to move further north.

    • Exactly. I am not keen on subscribing to previously played games. Bally has Pistons and Wings as well but the streaming impasse with other services besides DirectTV stream has gone on forever. Wish Bally/Sinclair would offer a stand-alone though a $25/month subscription would be a pretty high tag for those three second division teams.

    • Hey Mcwatt,
My home is in Traverse City and I have a cabin in the middle of nowhere in the UP and the blackout rule applies. Next year, I am going to have my son who lives in Duluth sign up for MLB for me and then I will sign in under his account and see if I can get the games wiothout the blackout rules. There is more than one way to skin a cat.
