  1. I chose “Other” because this team’s probably a couple of years away from being truly competitive. I’d be in “place-holder” mode looking for cheap, short-term free agents that could (hopefully) be traded for prospects at the deadline, eat innings to preserve young arms, provide a veteran presence, and buy time for kids to develop on the farm. And I’d challenge the analytics and scouting departments to step up and help spot the free agent bargains.

  2. Based on the question as presented, all I could do as GM is ask CI for guidance. Hopefully I would already know his plan, budget etc. I know you all think AA is some kind of idiot but I assure you he has been following CI’s plan from the start. I’m just happy that CI seems to have decided to move forward to improve the club.

  3. I voted “Other.” The most important criteria is the free agent’s TALENT- whether he is a position player or a pitcher. If the free agent does not have sufficient talent, his age, the position he plays, and his prospective salary don’t make any difference.

  4. I’m the kind of guy who likes the Ty Cobb way of playing the game, hitting for contact and good base running. W, Castro, Reyes, Jones, and Cameron (maybe) could be the ones. But then yoiu also need some power bats where Cabrera and Candelario should step up plus another one who could be or an OFder that takes over Cameron or an IFder, 2B or 3B doesn’t matter, there are playes on the roster with enough versatility to make up for it.

  5. I said position need since there are still a lot of holes to fill. I read that the Tigers were already interested in Tajuan Walker to fill a spot in the starting rotation. He’s interesting since he’s talented and only 29, but has been riddled with injuries. I think the Tigers will have a lot of competition in the bargain shopping / short term deal area this season. With the labor uncertainty and the COVID financial impact, it’s going to be very interesting to see how free agency unfolds. It would be nice to see them land a big name “Pudge-like” free agent to show they are truly serious about winning soon, but I dont expect it.

  6. I voted position need with two comments on the other choices. First I don’t care about their age, I wouldn’t sign any for more than 2 years, and second NOBODY gets a contract for more than 2 million a year.

  7. I would prioritize my free agent list as position need first, then look at my budget and then rank the candidates I can afford by age and health. It appears that the Tigers are heeding AJ’s “fix the pitching” mantra with news of Tajuan Walker. AA will have to overpay (3 years?) to get him to come to Detroit which would likely result in Fulmer and Norris being non tendered and using their combined salaries of about $6 million to pay Walker. That’s a great trade off in my opinion.

  8. It is tough to vote “position need”. The Tigers have needs at pretty much every position, although they always seem to assemble impressive depth on the DL. Go for somebody inexpensive, I guess; it is not going to cheap to remake the entire organization.

  9. I would eliminate all injury-prone players first. Then I would use analytics and rank the players, in this order, based on their hitting, defense, team chemistry, age, and finally where they fit in the batting order. The length of the contract will depend on their age, with no contract longer than 4 years. I would consult A. J. Hinch on those I am interested in. CI will tell me how much I can spend, and will do what I can from that list. I doubt CI will let me spend a lot on free agents, so I settled on Affordable as my choice. I would no longer be looking at future acquisitions to sign and flip them. That hasn’t really worked very well, anyway.

  10. I voted for position player because I feel that adequate catching is the biggest of their holes. Yes, they also need to fix the pitching, but who are those pitchers going to throw to? On the 40 man is Rogers, who’s yet to live up to the JV trade hype, Greiner, and Haase – neither of whom have overly impressed.
