Sunday is the one day of the week where we open up the comment parameters for you so you can get those juices flowing.

Comments on THIS DAY ONLY can be expanded to a maximum of 8 sentences.

We can’t wait to get your thoughts on the following topic.

The Tigers hired Chris Fetter as their pitching coach under new manager A.J. Hinch, who had this to say about the hire:

“For us to be good, and for us to get where we want to get to and where Al has directed the organization, we got to get the pitching right,” Hinch said Friday. “We got a lot better today.”

What is your impression of the Tigers’ new pitching coach?

  1. In my opinion, a great move. For all the hype about the boatload of superior young arms in the organization, they’ve largely under-performed. Whatever the Tigers were doing to “develop” these guys was definitely not working. So a young coach with new ideas is a breath of fresh air. Now show me the results. I’m tired of seeing unheralded rookie pitchers get called up by other teams and immediately look like Cy Young.

    • I agree McWatt, thank you.
But it’s just one step (significant for sure) toward a re-do of how this team is managed and improved. If comparable moves happen in the rest of the coaching staff, as well as in the training and development side of things, we might have the beginnings of something here. Not to mention cleaning out a few crony layers.

  2. I liked A.J. Hinch’s decision to hire Chris Fetter as the Tigers’ pitching coach. Fetter did an excellent job at Michigan,, putting several Wolverine pitchers into the pros. It is, obviously, important that the Tigers’ young pitching prospects, such as Mize, Skubal, Manning, Faedo, et al receive the highest quality coaching to enable them to succeed at the Major League level.

  3. I’m changing my usual grim Tiger outlook to “getting brighter”. Bringing Fetter and Lombard from LA onto the staff, along with Chip Hale and Coolbaugh, changes just about every aspect of the usual old boys club managerial hiring approach. Al has perhaps changed his strips?! Lelands voodoo-like influence may finally be broken? We shall see, but these are the things you want to see as proof of a new and better approach.

  4. The fact that we’ll have almost an entire new coaching crew is very encouraging. Now on to the training staff. When you’re on the bottom, the only look is up.

  5. I’m stoked about our pitching coach, Chris Fetter because of his extensive background in analytics and ability to work with young pitchers. Couple his hiring with all of the coaches that were announced yesterday, including our new hitting coach from the White Sox’s organization, Scott Coolbaugh, former Dodger’s 1st base coach, George Lombard to be our bench coach and former Nationals coach, Chip Hale to be our 3rd base coach and it’s hard not to be excited about our future. It appears that the days of Leyland’s involvement have been significantly reduced!

  6. I like the hiring, but i am cautiously optimistic. I simply have no faith in Al Avila to build a winning roster. I hope he proves me wrong eventually, but great managers and coaches plus mediocre players equal mediocre baseball teams. When I see a .500 team with lots of promising talent playing really good baseball, I will start to get more excited. Look back on when Sparky took over in 1979 – that team had lots of young talent with guys who were already contributors. Even a casual fan could tell that so many of those guys were legit big leaguers. I don’t see anywhere near that amount of talent yet on this roster. So far, it’s at least a sign that he and the organization are trying to break out of the same old way of doing business.

  7. I have read all the comments to see what others think of these hires since I am not familiar with any of them. Sounds like a lot of hope out there. For me, all this is nothing more than a change in direction. I will take a wait and see approach. A year from now we will undoubtedly be criticizing these coaches, and possibly Fetter. I ask everyone, when has a college coach ever been successful as a MLB coach? I don’t know the answer, hence the question. Are the other coaches just part of the recycling of MLB coaches we see every year?

  8. I am very encouraged by all the new coaching staff. I am surprised Lloyd is not returning, did they send Jim Leyland on a long trip while they made these choices?

  9. I want to be positive about these coaching changes but I think the real need is for a lot of player changes.
The current group doesn’t seem to be anything more than mediocre. I hope I’m wrong. I appreciate the comments of my blog mates.

  10. I’ve been a proponent of looking to the university ranks for coaches and even for a manager if the team is young and needs instructional development. The hire of Chris Fetter will be interesting to watch. And developing young pitchers is where video analysis makes total sense.
