THE SATURDAY SURVEY

The Saturday Survey offers readers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.   So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our baseball-lovin’ peeps.

Today, we center the discussion on the team’s recent recovery from their 9-game losing streak and the stretch run of the season with one month to go.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons  (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box.  Don’t forget to come back later and view the results!

The Detroit Tigers have recently pushed back from a 9-game losing streak to win 3 straight series.  They sit at 2 games out of reaching the playoffs currently (through Thursday’s games) due to MLB’s expanded playoffs and shortened season.

Totally Tigers loves your comments!  But please be aware that there are specific rules for posting and that comments may be edited in order to meet our specific requirements.  Responses are only published if they address today’s topic, are respectful and do not exceed the maximum 3-4 sentence response length.  Please become familiar with all of the rules at:  https://totallytigers.wordpress.com/commentsrules/.

  1. I voted for “Achieve playoff status” after I had a sardonic laugh at the option “Stay focused on rebuild.” Were the Tigers “Rebuilding” when they dumped the contracts of Verlander, JD Martinez, Justin Upton, Ian Kinsler, Shane Greene, Nick Castellanos, et. al. and Avila got Fleeced in all of those alleged trades ?

  2. To steal a line from Dandy Don” Turn out the lights the party’s over.” Or, from a Grimm tale, the emperor has no clothes. With a “once a week” hitting barrage and an every game travesty on the mound just forget about playoffs. Bring up the Toledo Tornados and at least make the rest of this year amusing if not interesting.

  3. Hey, one of the local papers decided to “contend” by actually allowing an honest analysis of the team and the rebuild to sneak in. How did that happen! But rebuild should absolutely be the focus with every best effort at allowing possible building blocks to get playing time.

  4. I don’t know; does this team look like a playoff contender to you? Take any team currently leading their division and compare their personnel to the Tigers player by player. Christin Stewart, Michael Fulmer…seriously?

    • I have no problem with Fulmer getting playing time. At 17 months into his 2 year rehab, he looks about what I’d expect, inconsistent but with flashes of things getting back together. This the best “season” you could ask for to see if he can make it back. Stewie, otoh, is what he is and all I can say is “why” and shake my head.

  5. This is not a good team. Yes they’ve won more than expected but we’ve seen them have strong starts before under Gardy and fade away. There’s no depth and not enough quality to go around. Everything should be focused on player development and the rebuild. Anything else is a bonus.

    • Great point about injuries. Each one (even Zim) is treated as a shock and terrific challenge by the team and beat writers. Athletes get hurt and good teams have a enough depth the compete with “next men up”. Tigers lose and outfielder and have a gaping hole!

  6. Focus on the rebuild but how many years should that take? Dombrowski called it a “reboot” in 2015 when trading Cespedes for Michael Fulmer and trading Price for Matt Boyd, Daniel Norris, and Jairo Labourt. Five years later we’re talking trading Fulmer, Boyd, and Norris as part of the rebuild?

  7. 24 hours ago my answer would have been different, but after the doubleheader loss last night, it’s back to focus on the rebuild…. sigh….

  8. Surprised myself by voting ‘both’. Not exactly sure why but this weird season with few expectations has me more interested than I’ve been in several years. And they’ve been surprisingly competitive and seem to be playing for fun. My hope is that they steer away from over-using the old guys and go deeper into the taxi squad to see what these kids have; use the ‘race’ to test their mettle and keep it interesting and fun for me.
