QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, KUDOS & CONCERNS

By:  Kurt Snyder & Holly Horning

After 78 games (35-43), the Tigers remain buried near the bottom of the American League. Now that July has arrived, things will really start to get interesting, as we contemplate player moves prior to the trade deadline.

Saturday’s segment is a day to touch on as many issues as possible. Let’s see what Kurt and Holly have on their minds this week. They don’t share their Saturday topics and it’s only for the readers’ benefit. So, expect a wide array of thoughts.

KURT

QUESTION

Is there any question that the baseballs are ‘juiced’ this season? Coming off a record-setting month for home runs and countless tape measure shots all season, how do we properly judge statistics from one season to the next when the actual baseball impacts the numbers? If MLB wants to juice the balls to add more excitement, and the numbers show an increase in long balls since 2015, then just keep it that way.

QUESTION

Would the Tigers be so bold at the deadline to include one of their 3 young starting pitchers in a trade package? You know, given that 2 of the 3 have not performed during a season when they were expected to make more of an impact, it would not surprise me, given our organizational leadership. But when Al Avila has already said he wants to get leaner, trading the lean wouldn’t make much sense would it?

COMMENT

An All-Star Game without Miggy? It says a lot about this season and a lot about our team, as the Tigers’ success normally lives and dies on the back of Miguel Cabrera. The fact that he hasn’t been good enough or healthy enough to even earn a spot on the ALG roster is a fairly safe indication for anyone to tell how well the team is doing without even knowing their record.

HOLLY

COMMENT

It takes a lot to get former pitcher-turned-analyst Ron Darling upset but with yet another injury to a player on the Mets, he unleashed a torrent of thoughts. Darling addressed all baseball teams about the rise in injuries as well as players who appear to play with constant nagging injuries that impact performance. He suggested that all teams bring in their former trainers to school the current ones about how to condition baseball players – “not weightlifters, not six-pack wearers” – and not be part of the problem that prevents million-dollar investments from being fully utilized.

CONCERN

It’s no coincidence that the two largest local newspapers both printed nearly identical stories by 4 writers in 3 days after the Tigers won 2 games over 3 days. The message was identical in addressing the controversial issues while also issuing decrees that fans who disagreed with their proclamations were “screechers”, irrational and unknowledgeable. Highly unlikely that all 4 writers came up with the same topics, tone, timing and attack on their own because it smacks of a coordinated effort with willing participants.

QUESTION

An interesting article this week by Pat Caputo who points out the habits so far seen in Al Avila since he became GM. Namely that the man has made no big decisions other than to sign an expensive pitcher and even appears reluctant to pull the trigger on either Brad Ausmus or trading players. But is it because Al doesn’t have the skills or is it because the new owner has assumed the decision-making powers?

  1. Comment/Concern: given that people do get beaned by baseballs in parks around the country whether they’re on their phone, paying the beer-hotdog-cotton candy man, or simply cannot react in time, the time is now to end this “bark in the park” promotion nonsense. Pets have no business at sporting events. I hope I’m wrong but it probably won’t be long till we hear of something very bad happening to a beloved pet at one of these games.

    • I have closed my account at one of the major “lumberyards” due to their insistence that dogs be allowed to shop with their owners. Example: An 80 year old man, rather frail looking, with a 100 Lb. dog leading him around. Keep them at home.

    • Chuck, I think I missed the point of your post. I’m not concerned about one of the dogs getting hit by a stray ball, but I am concerned that a fan will be bitten.

      • No problem. I indeed was referring to a ball hitting a dog. I hope this does not happen. I never did take into account that a fan could get bitten as well. Why not during a future All-Star break the Michigan Human Society host a pet adoption expo outside the park to promote pets, pet health and adoption. I think this would be a safer alternative to bark in the park.

  2. Holly is absolutely correct. Tiger coverage for the two major newspapers in the area is a joke. It is shallow and not ever critical At most, I now skip it. One other blog, in addition to Totally Tigers, is sometimes objective. And although some fans don’t like them, Dickerson and Price will often “tell it like it is”.

    • Yes sir! They print what they’re told-no journalistic integrity on their part. AND, they get votes on who goes into the Hall of Fame? That’s despicable. I move to shift their vote capability toward Holly & Kurt! They’re the most respectable, objective voices around about the Tigers! Isn’t that why we’re all here? We love you two!

  3. Holly, why is the local Detroit media being more critical of the fans critique than they are of a perpetually underperforming team. This team needs a major sea change, and Avila honestly is not up to the job. He does not either want to or has the necessary acumen to pilot this organization through what will be a complicated process.

  4. Re trading one of the young starters: Fullmer is about the only truly good young player the Tigers have, and the other two are under-performing, so their value is at a low point–I hope they all stay for now. Re injuries: I would love to see some comprehensive data comparing time on the DL in 2017 in all of MLB vs. in (say) 1987.

  5. Just checked the latest AL All-Star voting results and Miggy is the only Tiger showing up anywhere, and he is not even in the running for his position. Pretty bad when you can’t even get one of your outfielders in the top 15. Dickerson and Price need to give the score more often.

  6. One member of the Detroit media who I could imagine questioning the direction of the Tigers was the late Drew Sharp. Whether you agreed with him or not, his articles were often not an opinion based on the company line (the team or the newspaper).

    • Drew could not be bought. However, my problem with his rag was too often he used his ink to weigh in on race issues. If we are looking for some old time journalist give me Joe Falls or Jerry Green.

  7. Preferably I would wait until the end of the season to make the decision on Ausmus. If he is fired now and a coach (probably Vizquel, Lamont, or McClendon) is the interim and the Tigers make a slight improvement, that coach would probably be hired as manager for 2018 and beyond. Wait until the end of the season and see who is available (possibly Clint Hurdle and others).

  8. Any daily TT reader knows that a major complaint of mine has been just as Ron Darling states: the overall conditioning of not only the Tigersbut all of baseball is disgusting. When is last time you heard a Tiger hurler say he had to get his running in? Base running 1st to 3rd, score from second on a single? Long ball power is today’s game.

  9. A could-be controversial comment here and I’ll take all heat and responsibility for it: Given that the two Detroit papers are most-often liberal in reporting, thinking and opinion, perhaps these writers are of the agenda that they want us as fans and readers to think like they do. When we don’t and disagree with them, here comes the fan ridicule and name-calling. Makes one think who’s really more unhinged and it’s not us fans.
