YOU MAKE THE CALL

You Make the Call is the segment where readers must make a decision.

Every week we identify an issue that is going on with the Tigers.  And it’s an issue that must be resolved by A.J. Hinch.

Readers must choose one decision from the 2 or 3 offered as the one you feel is the best way to address the issue.

As always, we ask readers to take some time to comment and explain their rationale. Please remember to keep your comments to the 4-sentence maximum rule.

Let’s kick this off!

A.J. Hinch went the entire 2021 season without the need to name a closer out of the pen. Once Michael Fulmer was added to the late-inning mix, both had opportunities for saves but Gregory Soto had most of them.

From what you have learned in 2021, who should get the majority of the save opportunities next season? You make the call.

For the first time in years, the Detroit Tigers are finishing the year on a strong note. Since May 8th, they have a 65-54 record (through Thursday). Their record since the All-Star break is 34-27. And currently they have won 9 out of their last 12 games.

They have gone from MLB’s worst record (.276 win/loss record) to currently 4 games under .500 (.487) and sitting in third place, just 1 game out of 2nd place. There are 10 game left in the season.

Today, we center the discussion on A.J. Hinch’s decision to stick with his current roster in September.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons  (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box.  Don’t forget to come back later and view the results!

A. J. Hinch has stated that the Tigers’ priority is to win every game possible for the rest of this year.  After a horrible April, the Tigers have played .500 or better ball every month.  Through Thursday’s games, they are 7 games under .500 and 2.5 games out of second place with 15 games left to play.

As a result, the Tigers have not expanded their roster by bringing up young prospects from Toledo.  Granted, their top prospects were only recently promoted to AAA.  Could another reason to keep the same roster be an attempt to get a further read on the current players as the Tigers start to prepare for 2022?

Do you agree with Hinch’s decision?

THE SATURDAY SURVEY

The Saturday Survey offers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.   So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.

Today, we center the discussion on Tiger pitcher Matthew Boyd and his future with the team.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons  (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box.  Don’t forget to come back later and view the results!

Matthew Boyd, after a return to the IL, is running out of time to show the Tigers that he is worth his salary.

Granted, he has been playing for a team that hasn’t been able to give him run support, but in 7 years with the Tigers, he’s had only 1 season in which his W/L record was above .500.  This year, his ERA is the best it has ever been and his WHIP is the 2nd best in his career.

Boyd is earning $6.5 million this year and he ranks as the second highest-paid Tiger after Miguel Cabrera.  He is arbitration eligible for next year and expected to earn app. $7.50 – $8 million.  He is a free agent after the 2022 season.

In support of Boyd, he is also a team leader and mentor to the younger players which is important as the roster continues to get younger.

The Tigers will have to consider if Boyd is worth his salary or if they are better off signing someone who can produce similar stats for less money.  If you were the Front Office, what single option listed below best fits what you would do with Boyd for the 2022 season?

THE SATURDAY SURVEY

The Saturday Survey offers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.   So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.

Today, we center the discussion on the centerfield position and how Derek Hill compares to another Tiger who used to play there.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons  (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box.  Don’t forget to come back later and view the results!

Remember the days when JaCoby Jones used to roam the wide expanse of centerfield at Comerica Park?

He was considered the Tigers best outfielder by a wide margin.  In fact, he was one of the best centerfielders in the league.

But he constantly struggled at the plate and was continually hampered by injuries along the way.  Since then, he has been designated for assignment, cleared waivers and sits on the outside looking in when it comes to the 40-man roster.

Derek Hill is a similar player to JaCoby Jones. Both players possess great speed, cover lots of ground in center and have made highlight reel catches.

So what is Derek Hill’s Achilles heel?  His offense just like Jones.

Meanwhile, Hill receives high praise for his play in centerfield and is considered an important outfield piece for the future.

Below is the question we need answered.
