It’s interesting to read how so many fans are still holding onto the same list of roster needs that Al Avila had. Thinking the same way and selecting players that fit the old mold of the Avila roster years.
But this is a whole new ballgame. New(ish) owner, new manager and a new man in charge. Even new titles.
Everything is going to be new in this regime. Including the characteristics of every player who is signed.
PoBO Scott Harris has given us the parameters in a number of interviews and statements. Here are the top 5 things he’s going to be looking for before inking any player to the 2023 roster…..
1.PLATE DISCIPLINE
The Tigers swung at more pitches outside the strike zone than any other team. One of the leaders in strikeouts and lowest walk rates in baseball. New players will have strong plate discipline and any existing ones will be coached to be better standards or find themselves outside looking in.
2. TEAM OFFENSE
Harris had alluded to past players as hitters who focused on themselves, instead of working as team to push runs home. He wants the lineup to attack pitchers as a group instead of as individuals. He argues for a “new offensive identity” in which pitchers are worn down, hitters set up each other and create leverage situations, and “put (sic) the team “in position to score runs in bunches instead of relying on solo homers or some other less stable approaches to run scoring.”
3. PITCHING STRATEGY
Again, Harris emphasized the team approach in pitching and not an individual one. A rotation and relief that attacks the strike zone no matter who is pitching. An aggressive approach against opposing hitters via command of the ball.
4. EAGER AND EDUCATED PLAYERS
Inquisitive and hungry players will be added to the roster while those who avoid coaching and prioritizing their advancement (in lieu of new puppies and social events in a couple cases) may find themselves somewhere else or demoted. Players will be going the extra mile for the chance to improve and to be receptive to coaching suggestions. The priority will be placed on those who put a focus on improving their play. Especially important given that internal reports have shown a system-wide regression throughout the farm system during Al Avila’s tenure.
5. THE STRIKE ZONE
It all comes down to the strike zone for both hitters and pitchers as it influences everything on the field. Harris will be looking for players who are capable of commanding that strike zone.
Scott says “It dictates pitch counts, count leverage, length of inning, it dictates the load you’re putting on the pitchers’ bodies and how many pitchers you’re going to have to use throughout a series. It also dictates the quality of contact you’re giving up and how much contact you’re giving up, which therefore influences the quality of defense you can build and execute behind the pitcher.
“It touches essentially every part of our game, so we’re going to start there. We’re going to start with the strike zone. We want to dominate the strike zone on both sides of the ball and we want to acquire, develop and retain players that can give us a chance to do that.”
Is there another benchmark you believe Harris will add to his list of requirements as he builds a roster of different players?

Holly, can you elaborate on the internal reports showing a system-wide regression throughout the farm system? Is this a post-Garko regression? I was under the impression the farm system made positive progress on many fronts last season.

Hi, Brooks – No, it is a pre-Garko regression that essentially dates back to when Avila took over and kept Littlefield and Chadd in charge. Garko is receiving high marks for his work and results are being seen already. – Holly

Great news. I was worried for a moment!

Hi, Brooks – Just re-read that section and saw how what I wrote could be misconstrued. I edited it so it reads more clearly. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. – Holly

Several position players showed marked improvement last year post-Garko. Parker Meadows, Josh Crouch, Andre Lipcius, and Wenceel Perez are knocking on the door (not to mention Kerry Carpenter). Not sure if Garko’s system was the spark but something or someone lit a fire under these guys.

I agree with your comment 100%. Just not willing to give each of them 500 at bats and 3 seasons in the majors before deciding they are duds like we have in the past. I am growing too long in the tooth for that!

It will be interesting to see what will be the criteria to be elevated to the majors.

Great point. You looked at Torkelson, Carpenter and some bigger salary guys– Playing time and promotion bore no relationship to production.

Great list of priorities Holly, it allows us to see how the Harris regime is moving forward. I think players who want to improve and are willing to work to do so.

Harris signed Matt Boyd for one year, and many people are perplexed by this. I think Harris saw something in Boyd in San Francisco that made him think it was worth it to give Boyd a shot in 2023. Maybe this move aligns with benchmark #3, but maybe another benchmark is leadership, which Boyd provides.

Uh, this is probably because if Avila had signed him we would all be screaming! (But Al would definitely given his some years with player options too). Hopefully this signing bears the fruits of the criteria that Holly lists, mirroring the veteran pitcher rejuvenation in SF.

Great list but don’t downplay defense. With pitch-to-contact, lack of defensive skills will be a deal breaker regardless of a guy’s offensive ability. Most teams are trending away from a full-time DH because a one-dimensional ties up a valuable spot on the active roster.

Hi, McWatt – Agreed. The topic is covered in #5. – Holly

Ironic about the transition away from the full-time DH in favor of multi-dimensional player options. Leading up to the universal DH, there was a lot of discussion about how it would extend the careers of older, slower, power hitters.

I love #5. I heard Harris say it and I have read this quote several times, it is like poetry. And coming from the new Tigers leader it’s like Moses coming down from the mountain, I hope it is etched in stone.

I’d like to see Harris sign a strong leader. As Andy points out above, the Matt Boyd signing may be providing this in part, but an everyday player who is in the dugout and on the field throughout the games would provide more presence and help advance many intangibles.

Alas, these criteria are not unique, as evidenced by our many betters in the league. I hope that Harris is building a team that can apply the criteria more precisely and intelligently to build a contender.

Great point. Simply doing what everyone else is doing won’t give you that extra “edge”. As Holly has pointed out, Harris seems to be going a bit further with extra coaches and perhaps in applying kinesiology.

He is certainly taking a comprehensive approach to developing a terrific support system for the players and manager.

Hopefully, speed is also a requirement.

That’s an ambitious checklist but a necessary one…I have the feeling we will lose some players who don’t fit Requirement #3 and I see Harris making some surprise picks to replace them. I was shocked with the Boyd signing but I’m looking forward to hearing “Yeah Boyd” again!

#1 above(Plate Discipline) bothers me in regards to at least one of the players on the team, Javier Baez. ” New players will have strong plate discipline and any existing ones will be coached to be better standards or find themselves outside looking in.” If Baez doesn’t improve his ways at the plate, how is he going to be put “outside” since the Tigers may be stuck with him assuming he doesn’t opt out of his contract next year.

If Hinch is able to implement the “new offensive identity”, Baez may become more selective at the plate.

With the year he just had, Javy may implement plate discipline on his own, I hope.
