SATURDAY SURVEY

So far, for the 2022 season, the Detroit Tigers added multiple new players to their roster:

Jonathan Schoop (2-yr. contract extension) $15 mill
Tucker Barnhart  $7.75 mill
Eduardo Rodriquez  $77 mill
Javier Baez  $140 mill
Andrew Chafin  $13 mill

For the 2022 season alone, the Tigers have added $55.75 mill more to their payroll.

GM Al Avila is still telling us that they want to add another starting pitcher.  The 3+ month lockout of players has had a lot to do with the delay in finding one. (Note: After this blog was published, it was announced that the Tigers signed Michael Pineda to a $5.5 mill/1 yr. contract.)

Unclear is whether Avila still wants to find another outfielder as he stated over the winter.  There is a possibility that they believe Riley Greene will make the Opening Day roster and thus fill that opening.

Still needing to be added to the yearly payroll is the salary for that starting pitcher.  Also, over 1 dozen players still need to have their salaries determined via arbitration.

How do you feel about what the Tigers have spent so far on the 5 new players listed above?

  1. Baez and the 2 pitchers were pleasant surprises. Do not see a need for another OF but nothing will matter unless we can beat the other Central Division teams who have not just been sitting around during the off season.

  2. Out of the gate with Tucker was the tip of the iceberg of signings. CI has delivered his promise to spend and spent another potential 8M tonight on the proposed signing of Michael Pineda, a solid back of rotation guy. But I was most surprised by the Javi signing that showed me that CI was really on board with AJ’S plan to the playoffs.

    • Tucker was not actually a signing. He was a trade and I am sorry that the trade market did not produce more. Shows you the market value of the Castros, Kody, Cameron, etc. Still they did add some positive WAR across the board and pieces for Hinch to play with.

      • True Hughie, I know Tucker was a trade. My point was CI showed from that point he was willing to spend. Actually, it began when Jonathan was extended.

  3. Twins just signed Correa to a 3 year contract for $105.3M and opt-outs for the first 2 years. I would have voted for the Tigers having spent about what I thought that they should, but not now. Twins still lack the SP to contend, so the Tigers need to sign or trade for another SP in case they do.

  4. I personally think the Tigers are “high on their own supply” of prospects. They need to spend more but maybe they believe the stories they plant with with beat writers. They sure don’t have much trade leverage past the first 4 or 5 guys.

    • All potential trade partners start with Jobe and Madden. And I seriously doubt AJ or Fetter would give that much up. Pineda will provide rotation depth needed without giving up the farm.

      • Pineda is a place-holder– 1+ WAR maybe. I’m not sure you are correct about Maddo and besides their depth is supposedly pitching. If so then other teams don’t value Wentz, Turnbull, Manning, Faedo, etc. as Tiger writers and some fans.

  5. The only thing I know about these additions is what TT has told us. Based on that, it seems we’ve done well, although the proof is yet to come.

  6. Adding reliever Andrew Chafin shows increased belief in defense. Tigers still need that back-end starter, but pickings are expensive. Tigers may add a starter after the season starts.

      • At season’s beginning Tigers may give Michael and other bullpeners a chance to spot-start. But as the season evolves, with the DL and double headers pressuring the lineup, another starter will be needed. Maybe from Toledo but more likely a trade.

  7. I think ownership and Al have a really good plan and they are sticking to it. This year they opened the wallet just enough to have a good chance to be at or near .500. If everything goes perfectly they could compete for a wildcard. I like where this team is heading.

  8. I have written many times here that CI was reminding me of the terrible owner of the lions. I no long hold that view. He said that when time was right(finance’s dictating) he would act appropriately. So far so good. He isn’t repeating his father’s mistakes. He seems to read Holly.

  9. The Twinkies just made our Central Division games more interesting by signing Correa and we’ll have the two top PR shortstops head to head. I now believe AJ, AA, and even CI think we have chance for a playoff spot. Once again, pitching and defense should be what decides it all. Only 162 games left before we know.

    • Twins fans are already bragging on MLBTR about how their FO suckered the Yankees to trade for 3B Donaldson, SS Kiner-Falefa, and C Rortvedt, in exchange for C Sánchez, & INF Urshela, so that they could sign SS Correa to that contract. They believe Twins will leapfrog Royals, Tigers, and Guardians for a WC, if not White Sox for the ALCD title, by trading for 2 A’s SPs.

  10. Im glad the Tigers signed a few pitchers of note this off season. However the lineup really lacks thump and any proven power OFers. I was hoping for a middle of the order slugger to put a scare into our opponents.

  11. The Twins just made a very smart move. I’m guessing they trade Correa and his manageable contract in July and reload the farm system. If we really want to compete we need to sign someone like Conforto.
