THE SATURDAY SURVEY

The Saturday Survey offers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic.   So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our passionate readers.

Today, we center the discussion on the value the Tigers received from some of their biggest investments.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons  (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box.  Don’t forget to come back later and view the results!

Like many teams this season, the Tigers were careful with their payroll and spent slightly less than they did last year.  This year, they rank 24th in MLB payrolls, currently sitting around $72 mill.

They added a couple new players on one-year deals and their first multi-year offer in the last 5 years with the signing of Robbie Grossman for 2 seasons.  A number of veteran players were signed to minor league deals with incentives if they make the major league roster.  Renato Nunez is one of those and he’s still young and under team control through 2024.  He could be the first base solution if all goes well.

Then there’s also the surprise of the season – Akil Baddoo, the Rule 5 draft pick who has performed exceptionally well so far.

And let’s not forget an entirely new manager and coaching staff (save 2).

Despite how little the Tigers spent, did they make smart signings?  Does the value of the people they brought on board equal or exceed the contracts signed?

Sometimes it’s not about how little or how much money was spent.  Sometimes it’s about the actual value received in return.

Which of the choices below do you believe will have the greatest value – and the best move made by the Tigers – by the end of the 2021 season?  Which one will offer the greatest return on investment (ROI)?

Let us know what you think by participating in the survey below.

  1. I think the best investment this off season isn’t on your list. Considering the absolute wasteland the Tigers had at catcher last year, the $2M spent on Wilson Ramos will turn out to be the best.

  2. Of the four choices offered on the survey, Hinch and his coaches offer the best return of investment , although their salaries have not been disclosed. Of all the additions made by the Tigers since the conclusion of the 2020 season, Jonathan Schoop, signed for $4.5 Million, offers the best return of investment. Schoop was the Tigers’ best all-around player in 2020.

  3. Hinch and the coaches should make a big difference this year. I also believe Nunez will, too, but he is just one player. It takes a team to make a difference and that is why the coaches are my choice.
