QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, KUDOS & CONCERNS

By:  Kurt Snyder & Holly Horning

Spring training is officially here! And that means only one thing……Questions, Comments, Kudos and Concerns – a wrap up of the most important observations of the past week. Observations that will have a lingering impact upon the Tigers and MLB.

Our 2 bloggers have identified their choices and they only have 2 sentences for each of their picks. As always, they don’t share before publication so let’s see how different – or similar – their selections are.

QUESTION

KURT

Akil Baddoo is as big of a long shot there can be when it comes to a Rule 5 draft pick making the team and hanging with the big club. His limited minor league experience certainly contributes to that long shot, but could his raw ability and athleticism possibly make enough of an impression to send him north?

HOLLY

Jim Leyland is once again making the media rounds with multiple interviews and being spotted in the stands every day watching the games with Al Avila and other members of the Front Office. He’s obviously got his GM’s ear, so I wonder how the Tigers can possibly formulate a successful strategy when they’re listening to both JL and A. J. Hinch, who are complete opposites of each other?

COMMENT

KURT

Willi Castro has grabbed all the headlines out of spring training and appears to be leading the competition for the starting job at shortstop. But eventually he’s going to have to be better defensively; a hard-hitting shortstop is definitely what you need but we can’t undervalue the art of saving runs and keeping the opponent’s outs to a minimum.

HOLLY

Brandon Taubman…. Jared Porter…. Ryan Ellis…. Mickey Callaway…. Sexual harassment behavior that was all “the worst kept secret” in baseball yet all of their former and current teams claimed they knew nothing about it while also, ironically (and disgustingly), pretending to support International Women’s Day. Let’s face it – illegal behavior will always be ignored if the person committing it is talented and if they don’t have their behavior called out by multiple victims in the national press as a way to force the team to correct the problem.

KUDO

KURT

Give the Tigers credit for keeping the memory alive and recognizing the first spring training without Al Kaline. Preparing his locker was a classy move and I look forward to what they have planned to finally honor him and his career in the future.

HOLLY

He may have been the Tigers’ 9th-round draft pick after missing a year due to Tommy John surgery, but my money’s on Tarik Skubal to be the first rookie pitcher to successfully break through. Multiple scouts, his manager and pitching coach all describe him as the hungriest and most determined of their young players while also describing his laser-like focus and work ethic as being second to none.

CONCERN

KURT

Grayson Greiner will have a challenge ahead of him when he returns from a broken nose he suffered after being drilled in the face with a dangerous 94 mph fastball. Greiner has struggled badly at the plate throughout his short career with the Tigers and now having to overcome the very real possibility of being a little gun shy upon his return is a concern.

HOLLY

Franklin Perez, part of the shockingly bad Justin Verlander trade, is going on his 4th year with the Tigers but having only pitched a whopping 26 innings in 3 years. Reports from journalists and scouts watching him throw on the back fields over the weekend all report that his sessions do not appear to be going well which is not surprising considering that he hasn’t pitched in a game for almost 2 years.

What did you miss on the Totally Tigers Twitter feed yesterday?

–        Remember the 2008 Tigers?  Does the roster remind you of anyone?

–       He will make at least 5 times more than over a dozen other players.  Who is he?

–       With a $72M payroll, the Tigers rank 24th in the league.  But guess what?

  1. Baddoo has turned my head as well, and though he’s not needed in 2021, he’s an intriguing prospect and I hope he’s kept on the roster to protect him for the future. Agree that Skubal looks like he’ll be the first to emerge. And Manning earlier than Mize a real possibility as well; Mize needs to work on bringing his pitch count down.

  2. I do not dislike JL as much as some of the other readers of this blog. In fact I really liked him when he fist came to manage. Having said that, it is absolutely insane for CI and AA to allow him so much exposure when you just hired a new manager and staff. JL just being around undercuts AJ. Have Jim scout and evaluate the Japanese and Korean players overseas. AJ needs to yank CI and AA chains sooner rather than later.

    • Agree Tony. I think JL was a good manager when it came to getting the most out of his players. He was below average strategically and has no apparent skills at talent evaluation. And he does undercut AJ, no matter how it is spun. So it is time to back off, move on or move out.

  3. Getting hit in the face with a 95 mph fastball is one of the toughest things in Sports psychologically and mentally for the players. Many players have been hit in the face, or beaned and never were the same. Paul Blair, Tony C. and many others had their careers ruined.

    • I really am pulling for Greiner after getting his nose broken with a fast ball. How awful. Fortunately for his standing in camp, he has virtually no competition in camp for the backup spot. Rogers has not shown himself to be improved as a batsman.

  4. Great line: “Part of the shockingly bad Justin Verlander trade.” It was evident, as soon as the trade was announced, that Al Avila had been fleeced by Houston. With the passage of time, this trade appears to be one of the worst in Major League history. The Detroit sports media persists in their attempts to pump up the potential of Jake Rogers, Daz Cameron, and Franklin Perez. In reality, Perez has been on a three year sanbatical.

  5. Regarding supporting International Women’s Day, oh, the hypocrisy of MLB! This is exactly why when players use their so-called “platforms” to call attention to whatever cause they’re getting behind this week or any other time, I pay them no mind when it comes to that.

  6. Yes skubal is the only pitcher to impress me. As for the Illich tigers history…short stops who quote jhonny p. ‘i don’t do defense Im el matador-I hit home runs…only wanting playing time with Cardinals got him to commit to the lesser half of his game.

  7. The “shockingly bad trade” by Al Avila, is but a tip of the iceberg to his track of horrible trades. This incompetent GM has a horrid, failed track record of trades and signings which leaves a true Tiger fan befuddled beyond words.Chris Ilitch, wake up please!

  8. I agree with Kurt about Willi. He has earned our respect through last season and camp with his bat. I think a position conversion is in his future. First base or outfield/DH? They sure need him in the batting order but he could kill them at SS.

  9. No need to make any more references to Perez, Rogers, or Cameron. They will never be MLB caliber, at least not on a contending team. Something is seriously wrong with development as well as training/ conditioning when young pitchers like Skuball require Tommy John surgery. Starters should be trained to pitch smart for eight innings, not throw hard for three.

  10. Holly, you are over the target with respect to Jim Leyland. He is omnipresent again and he states he is invited by Hinch. Hinch is just being diplomatic. It is not good that Leyland is still around and has Avila’s ear, especially with a new Management team and coaching staff. JL knows better and I highly doubt he would accept this if the situation was reversed. A.J. Hinch and his coaching staff have their hands full with the cards they have been dealt.

  11. Al Kaline deserved one more day in front of a full house at Comerica Park to honor his legacy with the Tigers. Of course, that didn’t happen last year. Hopefully, when fans are allowed to return to the ballpark, the Tigers and fans can properly say good-bye to Mr. Tiger. He deserves that!

  12. Holly is correct once again concerning Jim Leyland and Al Avila. JL is like a big boulder in the road of progress for AJ Hinch and his staff. That does not bode well for changing the fossilized front office from the coaching position. Also, bench positions are going to be at a premium, so that doesn’t look good for keeping Akil Baddoo on the active roster as the Rule 5 pick.

    • It will be challenging for Baddoo to make the team, but given our current status with the rebuild, I’m hoping our mindset will be to protect an interesting prospect over another utility guy who might add two wins through the course of a season.
