On this holiday weekend, let’s revisit a blog from just before the season. Other than that Sanchez guy, the synopsis seems to be trending in the right direction.

Sometimes you don’t pull the trigger on a risky but potentially great idea until you have no other choice. Sometimes you stifle creativity in favor of a safer alternative.

Last season, the Tigers, after watching Michael Fulmer wow them during spring training, still sent him to Toledo to start the season. No one batted an eye. Shane Greene had “won” the 5th spot in the rotation, and no one batted an eye. It was the safer way to go. The Tigers weren’t ready to take the plunge with the best pitching prospect they had received in their 3 deadline deals from 2015.

But Shane Greene got hurt – and the Tigers had no choice but to turn to Fulmer. And aren’t we all glad that they did? The Tigers had the luxury of something they haven’t had much of for quite a long time; young minor league…
