  1. Yes, they absolutely can be a better team based on 2 factors: 1 – No major or long term injuries such as we had with Castellanos and Zimmerman 2 – Career seasons from guys such as Castellanos, Iglesias, McCann, and whoever our CF will be. Is this likely? No of course not, bur the question just asked if it were possible. ANYTHING is possible.

  2. We can only imagine and guess what held back Avila from the announced sellout if not for the Maybin trade. Did Mr I say: This is my team and I want to see them win? or Avila didn’t get the right pieces for a trade? or Once Avila saw the White Sox and Royals selling he had a thought the Tiges had better chances to contend? Take away all the IFs they can stay healthy (JV, Zimm, Vmart, Miggy), IF the young pitchers, J-Up and JD can repeat their 2016 performances, IF Sanchy can be the comeback player of the year, IF the bullpen, IF IF IF and you can see the team could be better. The last series in a NL park is also a problem to review.

  3. Yes. The “we are all in this together” attitude, IMO, is strengthened without the influx of new players. The feeling that “we are a team” I believe is strengthened. If they can stay healthy and Brad can learn from his prior mistakes and let the Team Chemistry gel, they can go all the way this year. Hey, I can hope, can’t I?

  4. This has all the feel of 83-84 again. Tigers lazyly got off to a bad month in 83, wasting the best record in the game the rest of the season. Much like last year. If, the largest word in the English language, with a little luck things go well it could be a great year.

  5. I don t think they can win the division or the World Series with what they have. Cleveland improved with player additions. So did several other first tier teams. Consider this possibility: what if Victor gets injured playing for Vevezuela this spring? What will Al do then?

      • Moyà makes a better option at the plate as a left-handed batter than Miguel facing a right-handed pitcher In terms of defence, Cabrera is an excellent first basemen, in spite of reports to the contrary. True, Romine would display more range, but how often has Miggy JUST missed a ball to his left or right? Not often. He has an excellent sense of positioning, and dropping the ball is not common.

    • T.B. I’m guessing that Al would go with “bullpen by committee”, which is the best approach in my book anyway. If Victor gets hurt in the exhibition league, I would hope it lets the team out of his fat contract.

      • The ’03 Red Sox tried that bullpen-by-committee approach and it cost them dearly in the ALCS. Whereas Bruce Bochy won with two 9th inning stoppers in his championships. I prefer to have that stopper where everyone has a defined role. Committees deal with a current hot hand and you never know when it cools till sometimes it’s too late.

  6. They can be better without any trades, but they will need a different manager to use the players in the way that makes the most sense given reality and not preconceived notions. For example, Miggy and VMart batting three and four does nothing but clog the middle of the lineup. But in Brad’s world, that is what you do with your sluggers, so he will never do anything different that would take into account that fact that neither can run and VMart can barely walk.
