TOPIC FOR TUESDAY

microphoneIt’s Tuesday folks, which means it’s your day! Today is the day for you to be heard on a selected topic.   You have the rest of the week to hear from Kurt and Holly, today is the day to let them know what you’re thinking on a given topic.

This is the one day of the week where we open up the comment parameters for you, so you can really get those juices flowing.

Comments on THIS DAY ONLY can be expanded to a maximum of 8 sentences.

So let ‘er rip!  We can’t wait to get your thoughts on the following topic.

Collins, Gose, Machado and Moya are out of options.  If you could pick only one to make the roster,  who would it be and why?

  1. I would keep Dixon Machado because I believe he has the most long term upside. Better speed, better fielding skills, and should hit for a higher average than the others. He may not fill as dire a need right now, but so what. He’s a better all around player.

    • Hi, Rick – It really doesn’t matter all that much if Gose isn’t on the roster. If he clears waivers, which is expected, he’ll be back and he still has an invite to Spring Training in an attempt to win the job. But this blog is about who you would pick and why. And it can be only one…… 🙂 – Holly

  2. I’d go with Collins. Sure, he flipped the fans “the bird” last season. He let his emotions show in an unprofessional way on the field. However, he may be the type to channel that emotion in a positive way and be a fiery player – an emotional leader if you will – that the Tigers don’t have due to their dry and business-like demeanor the team has had for years under Leyland and now Ausmus. Call me crazy but I think that would be the type of player Lloyd would want on this team if he were the manager.

  3. I agree with Lon. I would keep Machado for his upside. However, I would also want to keep Collins because he is needed more right now.

  4. Machado; I don’t see him as a significant downgrade from Iglesias. If a contender loses its shortstop before the trade deadline, Iggy could get us something of real value, worth far more than what we lose by playing Machado instead. I see no comparable scenarios whereby those other three can really help us.

  5. Moya and Gose are on the bus without a doubt. IF you have ANY thoughts of packaging Iggy during or after the season, they are forced to have Machado keep Romine company on the bench right now. BUT, Tigss are playing a “forced” all in one last season with their Vets salaries. For that reason I play them a TON this spring. I keep Best BA, swallow hard and package loser with a low grade Toledo prospect and make a deal for a above average pitching prospect.

  6. As a retired professional business owner, I can say that our New Hires were given a list of actions that would be cause for immediate dismissal. We didn’t have “flipping the bird to the clients” on that list because that would have been as obvious as “slashing clients tires”, also not on the list. Some things seem to be so obvious they don’t need to be stated. I respect everyone’s opinion but, IMO, Collins should have never been allowed to put on a Tiger’s uniform after he did that. I would go with Machado.

    • That’s pretty easy to say when it is someone making the league minimum. Would you have recommended the same for Joe Nathan when he effectively did the same thing with many millions of dollars owed him? I like Collins, he plays hard, hustles (unlike other overpaid vets), and wants to be a better player and person.

      • I don’t care how much anybody makes. Unacceptable behavior should not be tolerated. These are not little kids and an example needs to be made so it doesn’t happen again.

    • I very often align myself with your posts, Sprocket, but respectfully disagree on this one. How often in a business setting would an employee find himself surrounded by thousands of booing clients publicly chastising him? While his behavior was loathsome & indefensible, he shamed & humiliated himself. This was a teachable moment. Grace can be earned after disgrace if given the chance.

      • I am fine with him earning grace on another team. Fan abuse goes with the game. He knew that when he put on the uniform.

  7. Collins. I think he has something to prove to himself & the fans. His behavior was inappropriate but it was likely born of personal frustration. Directing it towards the fans was a mistake & he knows it. I think he will work hard to demonstrate it was a momentary lapse in judgement. If that emotion & intensity can be harnessed & channeled correctly there could be an upside to having him roam center field.

  8. Sorry I can’t stay within boundaries. For all the above stated reasons I’d keep Dixon and Collins. If that means loosing romaine…Ol’ well. And early in the season you can go one reliever lite till things sorted themselves out.

    • Who’s left to take his place for those 70 or so games he misses due to injury? Collins and Machado are the ones that should stay. Not sure what they can get for Moya. He has so much unrealized potential, such a waste.

      • htbob, how is Moya “such a waste”? His numbers improve with the number of AB’s. He has not had enough AB’s to accurately judge him, in my opinion. We’re full at his natural positions, DH/1B. A package deal for a pitching or IF prospect should relieve the logjam.
