What types of players should the Tigers target if they are able to trade some of their established players?

  1. The Tigers have to decide whether to completely tear down or just makeover. I vote tear down. The team is too old, too RH hitting dependent, devoid of speed and lacking defensive ability. The names of the players they may acquire are not nearly as important as is the fact that the farm system is so barren that they need to acquire prospects with a large upside, and in numbers. Select teams to trade stars to that can supply multiple numbers of prospects that include players with outstanding defensive ability and speed as well as the traditional guys with power and ability to hit for average. I absolutely love Verlander and Miggy but you can get the most in return for each of them, so one or both should be dealt because I’d keep JD (he’s still under 30 but MUST improve on defense) and Victor will not bring you any talent in trade. Dombrowski did a good job in trading Cespedes and Price, that is a good template. This is your mission, Al Avila…if you decide to accept it.

  2. I will make no names as the choice must fall on those who fit in the right place in the lineup (base stealer, OBP, and so on) but I would prefer a team better built for Comerica. VMart, J-Up, Castellanos and Miggy (hoping he stays) should be the RBI men, all the others should be good defenders and good on the basepaths. KC won the WS with Orlando&Aoki, Cleveland has Chisenhall, Davis&Crisp, so why do the Tigers have to spend a bunch of money for a handful of flies?

    • I’m with Frankie. If J.D. must go, let’s get a stud CF and a corner OF capable of making the starting lineup. We need someone who can start a rally by hitting the gaps. Add two speedy, high OBP guys to this lineup, and we got a winner. Is there someone out there that could be had in a trade with what we have available? I know the Ricky type don’t come along every day, but someone with his hustle, speed, attitude, and a high OBP. There is reportedly some interest in Sanchez and Pelfrey. Take a chance on an unproven speed demon, and trade for the starting centerfielder. Packaging one of these guys, or even Upton, with J.D. should stir some interest.

  3. We need young, major-league capable position players. Ideally, fast ones. The farm system all but stopped producing this commodity early in the Reagan Administration.

  4. The Tigers can be done with this Winter Turkey Carving with one swoop and rid me of insanity with all these Tear Down notions. 2017 is too valuable to throw an entire carcas in the disposal. VM has to GO (he is an absolute rally killer)but he needs some pumpkin pie with him – thus Miggy. Illitch will need to swallow hard and avoid Turkey bones. Advancing age, legs, feet etc make Miggy lumpy potatoes but with last seasons numbers, highly expendable. In return, 3 very good prospects: pitcher, infielder, corner OF. Pay JD. There, meaningful 2017 BB Holly!

  5. I still believe in Santa Claus so here goes. I’d like to see players who are better suited for Comerica Park. I want them young, speedy, & enthusiastic. I want a balanced lineup; lefties & righties. I want pinch hitting power/put the ball in play ability off the bench. I want good arms & above average tracking skills in the outfield & strong defense up the middle. I like the style & skills of guys like Jose Altuve, Mookie Betts, Lorenzo Cain, Jason Heyward, Starling Marte, & Michael Conforto. I want bullpen arms that can shut games down after the 6th inning. I want J.V. to remain a Tiger. He can mentor the young guys & role model tenacity & competitive spirit. One “if only” has made my list … we could choose a new manager.

  6. My worry is this. The Tigers have not been good (or have not made it a priority) in drafting and developing young players. That’s why the farm system is in poor shape. If the Tigers have been bad at managing their own farm system, how can they know what players in other teams’ farm system will develop? DD did get Norris and Fulmer in trades and that appears to have worked out. Will AA have the same eye?

  7. I’ll be sick if they trade either Miggy or Verlander. These are two of the reasons to even watch the Tigers. I don’t buy this “tear it all down” crap. This team nearly made the post-season last year despite their injuries. With that rotation, and if they stay relatively healthy, the could easily contend. No way will Cleveland be as good next year. They played way over their heads and have a great manager, but don’t look for that to happen again. The division is again up for the taking. Will we take it? or trade good players for iffy prospects. Don’t get me wrong….if they trade Cabrera to Houston and get Altuve of Keuchel…I’m all for it.

    • No doubt the prospect haul will be better if the Tigers trade their aging stars now rather than a year from now, but is that incremental difference in return worth giving up what is likely to be their last serious chance to get that ring for many years to come?

  8. Hit the button now but keep Miggy. That’s about all Illich can leave as his legacy. Mighty Miggy wearing the Old English D forever enshrined in the BBHOF.
